What is a Privately owned Fire Hydrant?

Fire fighters use fire hydrants to give them a local access to a good strong supply of water. In some cases the nearest fire hydrant in a public foot way is not close enough to the building so a second fire hydrant needs to be sited on private property. These are known as privately owned fire hydrants and should be installed by a competent fire hydrant contractor.

The fire engine is connected to the fire hydrant using a hose. A hose at the property side is then connected taking advantage of the new local supply. The firefighters are therefore able to move lifesaving water more effectively and powerfully to the cause of the fire.

Since 1989, fire hydrants located on private property remain the responsibility of the person who manages or owns that property i.e. the property owner, landlord or facilities manager.  It is their legal responsibility to maintain the fire hydrant and keep it in working order.

How can we help?

Fire hydrants require testing every 6 months, it is a legal and safety necessity.  It ensures that in the event of a fire, the fire brigade have all tools available to them, in good working order, to support them in their bid to save lives.

Underground fire hydrants also require regular inspection by a competent fire hydrant contractor and regular maintenance to ensure that they will work correctly.

The hydrant installation and maintenance of privately owned fire hydrants are governed by British Standards and Building Regulations.

Because maintenance of a privately owned fire hydrants is a legal requirement, it is important to use a specialist contractor for the testing, design, installation and maintenance.

As a specialist fire hydrant service and installation company, we offer a comprehensive maintenance and commissioning service which meets all the legal requirements. You will have peace of mind that your Fire Hydrant is in safe hands.
